The Iconic Mac Flurry

When I was in elementary school, I remember entering a computer lab full of clunky ca. 2008 iMacs and seeing the iconic flurry screensaver dance on the several dozen black screens before me. On my first day of class this semester, I was confronted by the same animation, what can only be accurately described as a psychedelic sea-anemone, that has become an icon for the digital age. I wonder if in 20 years the flurry will still make an appearance on our computer screens or if we will have outgrown it.

This article describes an art exhibit about the iconic screensavers of years past

Anni Albers Textiles – Color Sense

Anni Albers was a German textile artist and print maker who was the first designer to have a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Though her legacy was often shared with her husband, Josef Albers, Anni Albers’ work and writings helped to establish Design History as a relevant field of academic study.

These design pieces are also great inspiration for Project 1.3, particularly if you are working with color and geometry (which most of us are!)

I probably own the world’s strangest yoga mat feat. Mr. Clean

In the process of completing Project 1.2, one of my classmates was toying with the idea of using the iconic Mr.Clean as a base for a “clean meat” character for one of his fictional symbols. This reminded me of the bizarre yoga mat that my mother got from Material for the Arts that features an extra-creepy version of the bald man from the sponge commercials… and his intestines. I don’t know why I still own this thing — maybe I’ll flip it over and do yoga at some point. Either way, it is an interesting take on the graphic design of functional products, and I sure as heck have never seen anything else like it.Weird

Gorgeous websites I’ve encountered

This weekend has been a particularly busy one for me due to several assignments from 34th Street Magazine that took me outside of campus — yesterday to a restaurant in Northern Liberties and this morning to Center City for an interview with a Penn alumnus who owns a production company. That being said, I was actually really impressed by the websites for both the restaurant and the production company.

(Also shameless plug for my articles, coming soon!)
